Is it really time to consider a nursing home?
Elder Home Share talks to families every week who are concerned about an elderly loved one who is living alone and in need of some extra support.
Decisions around consider a nursing homes as the next step solution for their parent is on the agenda, but is this really what is needed or right at this time. Would a little extra care during the day or evening, and someone sleeping in the house at night, suffice.
Elder Home Share is keen to support homeowners who want to continue to live at home with the support of an Elder Home Share companion. We like to make sure that this is really the right fit for their needs, so families need to provide a reference letter from the family doctor. This ensures that both the homeowner and the home share companion are not being put in a situation which would be better served by a professional carer.
As the founder of Elder Home Share, and a home share companion myself for the past three years, I have seen how families have been able to extend time at home for their elderly loved one and push out the need for the support of living in a nursing home. David, 99, who I lived with for two years is now in a nursing home and is well supported, looking bright eyed and bushy tailed. Likewise, another homeowner, Kay, had a home share companion in the home with her for two years before she went into a nursing home in her 90’s. Nursing homes definitely have their place in our lives as we age but from what I see, from working with our clients, there is no place like home and as the founder of Elder Home Share, it’s our goal to extend the quality of life at home, through the Elder Home Share service.
